Interviewer:Per Mertesacker, congratulations on reaching the next round, the quarter finals. Why was the German team so sluggish and prone to mistakes?
Per Mertesacker:I don’t care. We’re among the last 8 now and that’s what counts.
Interviewer:[laughs] But this can’t be the standard you’ve aspired to, you realize that when you’re in the quarterfinals you’ll have to improve?
Per Mertesacker:What do you want from me? What do you want, just after the match? I don’t get it?
Interviewer:Congratulations, and I just wanted to ask why the defense and switch to quick offense didn’t work as well as we thought.
Per Mertesacker:Do you think the last 16 are some kind of carnival group? They made it difficult for us for 120 minutes, and we fought until the end. And we were convincing, especially during the extra time. It was an up and down; we were courageous, allowed a lot. Still, we had to hold the nil for a long time and we did that, and apart from that we deserved to win in the end. Everything else… I’ll be in an ice bath for three days, then we can analyze the match and see.
Interviewer:A show of strength and energy; do you think the Wow-effect is gonna come as it did during the 2010 World Cup for example, so the technical play will improve?
Per Mertesacker:What do you want - do you want a success at the Cup, or do you want us to play beautifully and drop out? I don’t understand this line of questioning - we moved on, we’re very happy, we gave everything today and will prepare to meet France.
